Topic: Item Brainstorm - Simple sextant/compass

I have code in place to allow the user to see their general region, as well as code to see more specific coordinates.

This would be two different items, where the more specific one requires much higher skills to craft.

Sextants and compasses are the traditional answer, but these might also be too complex.

What are your ideas?

Compass is a really good one. A map or something?

Re: Item Brainstorm - Simple sextant/compass

The compass as a basic thing... with perhaps an indicator to where the starting area is too (at least I tend to forget that), and the map... that fills up as you explore? But of course with a set durability (of ~1000+), for say the amount of steps you take.
And it wouldn't work underground I think =P

We can mine iron, and forge it... so a compass would be possible to make I think.

Re: Item Brainstorm - Simple sextant/compass

You can make a magnet by running one iron bar along another over and over and over, IIRC; filing that into a compass needle shape would suffice. It also leaves the possibility open of wanting magnets for other purposes and perhaps ways to make stronger magnets way down the line.

As for sextants, it does seem a bit of a leap; if you look at all the other stuff you make using metal, it's all rigid stuff. We don't actually have the ability to construct a single joint or anything. (We haven't even made wheelbarrows!) Keep it in mind, but only insert it when the general 'tech level' has advanced to the point where it'd make sense that they'd build it.

Re: Item Brainstorm - Simple sextant/compass

A stationary compass can be made by taking an iron (or steel) sliver, rubbing it vigorously in your hair, and placing it on top of a leaf floating in a pool of water.  Seen it on Man VS Wild, tried it IRL to verify - worked just fine.

It's well within the realm of possibility - if you have iron, you can make a compass, no other technology needed.
